2010 Ocean Sciences Education Leadership Institute:

Seas of Change: Exploring Southeastern Climate Change
June 23rd - July 1st, 2010
NC State (Raleigh) & Trinity Center (Morehead City)

COSEE SE is teaming up with regional marine and climate scientists to offer a weeklong investigation into the connections between climate change and our world’s oceans- specifically, those issues pertaining to the southeast region! Explore the interconnections between global climate change and sea level rise, sea surface temperature, and ocean chemistry.   Activities and resources provided will be aligned to state standards and will specifically address STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. Any formal or informal educator in NC, SC or GA is invited to apply. All lodging, transportation during the workshop, materials and some meals will be provided by COSEE SE.  Deadline to apply is March 31st, 2010!

A truly unique COSEE SE opportunity to explore the science of the salt marsh through the creative arts!  This workshop will use photography, literature, and visual arts to investigate the ecosystems of the salt marsh. Activities and resources provided will be aligned to state standards and will specifically address STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. Any formal or informal educator in NC, SC or GA is invited to apply. A $65 registration fee will cover all lodging, meals and supplies.  Deadline to apply is February 8th, 2010!

2009 Education and Applied Research in Coastal Habitats Workshop:

Coastal Ecological Research Experience for Teachers
A Georgia Teacher Quality Higher Education Program supported workshop / graduate course
July 12-24th, 2009
University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium at Skidaway Island

SEARCH 2009 will provide participating classroom teachers with a unique professional development opportunity through collaboration with scientists conducting ecosystem research. Participants will be assigned to a research project in field and laboratory settings including the Sapelo Island LTER site.  In preparation, teachers will attend an intensive week of coastal ecological study at the University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium (MECA) facilities on Skidaway Island. Classroom implementation will be aided by the participant teachers’ creation of parallel research projects for their classes and colleagues through a public and web‐based data sources. Evaluation will track knowledge growth of participants in terms of science content as well as applications to teaching through teaching portfolio creation. This is a residential program based at UGA facilities on both Skidaway and Sapelo islands. Workshop participants will have the option of earning ten Professional Learning Units (PLUs) or six graduate credit hours through the University of Georgia. Funding for this course is provided by the Georgia Teacher Quality Higher Education Program. Activities and resources provided will be aligned to state standards and will specifically address STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines. Impacts of Growth and Development on Coastal Wetlands

Why are wetlands important? How do I impact estuaries? How are inland cities connected to the coast? Join COSEE SE for the 2009 Coastal Legacy Workshop June 15-20, 2009 at the Honey Creek Camp and Conference Center in Waverly, GA! Any formal or informal educator in NC, SC and GA is invited to apply for this weeklong educational opportunity which will explore impacts of development to the health of our estuaries and wetland systems. Participants will interact with local scientists, learn new, standards-based activities to take back to your classroom, meet fellow teachers from GA, SC and NC and receive LOTS of teaching resources!
