South Atlantic Bight » Animals and Biological Resources

SAB

The South Atlantic Bight habitats extend from the seafloor to the surface, estuaries, tidal rivers and wetlands. Many marine mammals, fish and invertebrates call the SAB home.

Research

Marine Resources Monitoring, Assessment, and Prediction Program (MARMAP), Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP)

MARMAP, SEAMAP: The Marine Resources Monitoring Assessment and Prediction Program assess the status of reef fish stocks by conducting life history studies on fishes sampled during annual surveys.

Commercial Fisheries
South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC),
North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (NCDMF),
SCDNR Marine Resources Research Institute (SCDNR-MRRI),
Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR),
NC SEA Grant, SC Sea Grant, GA Sea Grant

Conservation:

Snowy Grouper, one of the deepwater grouper species found within the South Atlantic Bight

MPAs which came into effect February 12, 2009.

South Atlantic Fishery Management Council Spring 2009 newsletter features an article by George Sedberry of NOAA Grays Reef National Marine Sanctuary entitled, "Connecting Areas of Spawning, Productivity, and Marine Protected Areas in the South Atlantic Bight." This information provides evidence needed to protect some areas of the ocean for future fisheries.  It also provides a background for students to use the SECOORA, "Ocean Currents: Who Goes with the Flow?" poster for discussion about how biological oceanographers and physical oceanographers work together.  This is real science with both natural and social applications.
